Top Tips for Your First Sports Day

As the weather gets warmer and the end of the school year draws closer, schools, parents and children will be getting ready for sports day. Sports day is a great opportunity for children to be praised for their good sportsmanship, athletic abilities and enjoy a healthy and active day out in the sunshine – all the while being cheered on by their families and friends! If this summer brings your little one’s first sports day, we’ve got all the tips you need: Bring Refreshments: Sports day can mean a great deal of time spent in the heat. Stay hydrated by bringing plenty of water for you and your child – and maybe a flask of tea or coffee for you to share with the other mums and dads! Stay Protected: If you’re lucky enough to catch some of the British summer sun, make sure you protect you and your child’s skin against the sun’s rays. Use a high factor sun cream and make sure your child is wearing a hat to keep the sun off of their head and face. It’s Not About the Winning: It’s about taking part! Whether your child wins or loses their race, their first sports day is a great chance for them to learn more about teamwork and being a gracious competitor. Support healthy competition, but encourage your child to congratulate the winner or shake hands and compliment the runners up. Phones Away: While taking a few quick photos is absolutely fine, remember that your child will want you to be watching their race and cheering on their school team or house. Showing your child that you are excited and happy to be there is far more important. Make Yourself Comfortable: If the school isn’t providing chairs for the grown-ups to sit on, bring a picnic blanket (maybe even a picnic as well!) or, if you have room – maybe a deckchair or two! When It’s Your Turn: After all the children’s races have been won, many school sports days invite the parents to take part. Try to do a few discrete stretches in your chair or on your blanket – you don’t want to injure yourself after having been sat down for a while! Though it is all a bit of fun, remember that you are setting an example for your child, so be a good sportsperson – no cheating, be a gracious competitor and don’t give up – even if you’re in last place with a sack pulled up to your waist! If you want to make sure your child doesn’t lose sports clothes or mix up trainers, make sure you label their clothes with woven tapes or can identify their plimsolls with our shoe label covers.
