Tips for Encouraging Your Child to Read More

Encouraging children to read has always been a challenge, especially in today’s day and age where the TV and tablets are more appealing to our little ones. But, we must persist; regularly reading has been shown to provide many benefits for a young child, improving their concentration, vocabulary and imagination, among other things! Here are some tips for encouraging your child to read more.

Visit your local library If your child finds reading to be a chore, let them choose the books that they’d want to read. Creating a regular routine of going to your local library each week will not only give your child a deadline to finish their chosen book for the week, but also gives them a little bit of responsibility, which may encourage them.

Create a reward system Increase your child’s sense of accomplishment when they finish reading a book by creating a chart or graph to record their progress. Adding a reward to the mix will only encourage them further as they look to achieve their next reading goal.

Let them learn by example Take time out of your busy schedule each day to read something, whether that be a novel, a newspaper or even a recipe book! Letting your child see you reading each day will let them know that reading is an important activity and will encourage them to read too.

Show interest in your child’s reading Your feedback goes a long way to determining how your children will read in the future. Taking an interest and asking your children questions about what they’re reading will go a long way to generating a positive connection between your child and reading.

Make use of technology Modern technology is not a hindrance to your child’s reading, but actually a helpful tool to get them reading regularly. E-readers have the added benefit of adapting to your child’s needs whether that be enlarging font or reducing the number of lines per page. Limiting your child’s time on the tablet will also give them the impression that it is a treat and be even more excited to use it for their next reading adventure.

Remember, you are giving your children books to read, help them out by giving them a book bag to carry them around with them. Not only will this prevent them from getting lost, but you can personalise the bag with their name, giving them a sense of ownership. We hope these tips help to encourage your child to read more.
