STEM Projects for Little Scientists

We’re sure every parent has spent what feels likes hours at the kitchen table, encouraging our children to finish their homework to the best of their ability – despite their protests! Though homework can sometimes be a chore, learning doesn’t have to be. If you’re looking for more educational projects to do at home – we’ve got some great ideas for incorporating STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) learning into craft and play.

Salt Crystal Leaves Now that autumn is well and truly here, we thought we’d start off with some seasonal STEM craft! Though Jack Frost hasn’t visited us quite yet why not take his place with these salt crystal leaves. If there’s no autumn leaves in your garden or local park just yet – pipe cleaners work just as well! With enough salt, children can watch crystals start forming by the hour.

Chromatography Butterfly Craft If you and your children are not quite ready to say goodbye to summer colours, try your hand at chromatography with these coffee filter butterflies. This little project blends science and creativity perfectly, as when your colourful wings are ready, you can make some really pretty butterfly crafts!

Baking Soda Rockets Bring Bonfire Night forward with these brilliant baking soda rockets. Children will love to see their homemade rockets whoosh up into the sky! Be sure you stand back and give the bottle a good shake after all the ingredients have been added – the bigger the shake, the higher the rocket will soar!  Why not have a rocket race? Label your rockets with our Stick-on Labels and see whose launches highest!

Homemade Lava Lamps You’ll likely find the equipment and ingredients these awesome lava lamps in your cupboards at home. Kids of all ages will love watching the chemical reactions in their colourful creation.

Egg Drop Challenge Egg Drop Challenges are a classic STEM experiment for kids – older children may well have done this at school, so it will be interesting to see what knowledge they have gained second time around! Give your children maybe 30 mins to an hour to construct their egg protector – parents should make one too! See whose egg survives a fall from an open window, a climbing frame, balcony or whatever safe height you can find!   What are your favourite learn and play activities? We’d love to hear from you!
