Help Your Child Get More Organised This Year

We’re now well and truly settled into 2017 and without a doubt, many parents vowed to become more organised in the New Year. But what about our children? Personal organisation is an important life skill and, though it doesn’t come naturally to everyone, we’ve got the top tips and products to help you and your family get more organised this year.

Keep a family calendar: Keeping a communal, family calendar is a great way to teach organisational and time management skills. Get your children in the habit of adding their own activities themselves. Judo on Tuesdays at 5pm, ballet on Thursdays at 4pm, football on Saturday at 9am – feeling like they’re in charge of their schedule will make your child feel adult and (hopefully!) mean that you’re not the one who has to remember which kit to bring!

Use to-do lists: Every adult finds to-do lists helpful – so why should children feel any different! Pin a daily to-do list in the kitchen or their bedroom, one half for the morning (brush teeth, put breakfast bowl in the sink, double-check book bag) and one half for the evening (help clear dinner table, tidy room, shower/bath). Nothing complex, but enough for you to relax and know that your child will be ready for the school run and for bedtime.

Carry out weekly school bag audits: Primary school children have few responsibilities – though one of them is their schoolbag. Keeping schoolbags tidy and organised makes things easier for children, parents and teachers, so set some time aside each week for your child to go through theirs to clear out lunch remains, invitations and school notices. Start off by helping or supervising them and before long, they’ll be doing it independently. We find having separate bags for the different activities are a great help. Use a Bag Tag on each bag or better still use an embroidered Shoe Bag for the different activities, i.e. one for ballet and one for football.

Help tidy their cupboards: Try using plastic containers and boxes as wardrobe organisers. Use our stick-on labels to make it clear what goes where. When all your child’s belongings have a place, they will find it easier to find and tidy toys, games and their uniform.

Create an organised homework space: Make all homework fun with your child’s own workspace. Whether this is a permanent place in their room or a temporary space at the dining table, ensure your child has a calm and organised place to work. Use our personalised stationery to put together a homework supply box for your child to keep neat and tidy.

Get ready the night before: This is always a tricky one, try to get your child to organise their books and schoolwork the day before to help with the morning rush to school. Laying out their school clothes ready is always a good time saver.

Label everything: whilst at school children struggle with keeping their belongings together. Make it easier for them by labelling all their stuff to help them know which is theirs to bring home. Take a look at our full range here
