Back Garden Olympics

The summer holidays bring the perfect opportunity to get active, outside in the sunshine (hopefully!). We may be three years away from the 2020 Summer Olympics, but rather than wait for the sporting events to kickstart in Tokyo, why not hold a 2017 Summer Olympics in your own back garden! The more, the merrier, so have your children invite some friends over for the back garden festivities!

No Olympic games are complete without an opening ceremony! On a rainy day before your back garden Olympics, why not take the time to give your children a little geography lesson? Talk to them about the competing countries and show them their flags before making your own with coloured pens and paper. Then, when the some comes out, put on some music and hold your opening ceremony in the garden.

Discuss Start things off with an easy discuss throw. Give each child a Frisbee with their name on it - they may want to spend some time decorating it! Have your mini athletes stand behind a certain point to throw their Frisbee as far as they can – whoever’s makes it furthest wins! If there is a larger age gap between players, it might be a good idea to let the little ones stand a little further forward!

Bean Bag Toss We love the sound of DIY bean bags! It is quick and easy to put together and will keep the children entertained for hours, as they will love helping to make it almost as much as they will playing with it! Use our Sew-on name labels to personalise each bean bag.

Relay Race Relay races are a great way for children to learn great teamwork and good sportsmanship, while still having their time to shine and do their best. Using a bean bag or Frisbee as a baton, have each team member run a lap of the garden as their leg of the race and encourage each child to cheer on their teammates and congratulate them on their efforts.

Egg & Spoon We couldn’t leave out the egg & spoon race! A popular party game and sports day staple, the egg & spoon is a great way to round up your garden Olympics. The novelty race is great fun for everyone and often ends up with all competitors in giggles!
