Join our Easy2name fundraising scheme and we will send you a fundraising pack which will include order forms, stickers with the group name on them (to identify the forms), samples and posters.
All you’ll need to do is stick on the labels and distribute the forms. Any orders we receive by post, phone or at www.easy2name.com will attract a 20% commission. This is paid directly into the group bank account once £10 or more is made, but commission now expires after two years so keep on top of things.
Just let us know your contact details and how many forms you would like.
It’s a great time to join us, with all the new children starting school in September and all their uniform and kit which could get lost!

Rain Rain Rain

With the wettest April on record for 100 years, we are still in a drought with a hosepipe ban until at least Christmas! And May hasn’t started off very well either!
The Headley ford is just down the road from us here in Newbury, it was awful to hear of a man and his dog drowning when trying to drive through it. As locals we all know it is completely impassable during winter or through periods of heavy rain. Many many cars have tried to pass before and have been rescued and written off. We now just hope something is finally done to prevent such a tradegy happening again.

There are currently 95 flood alerts and warnings in place by the Environment Agency.

Some tips they give for preparation are to:

Make a flood plan (list emergency numbers, relocate and protect personal items)
Prepare your property for flooding
Check your rights and responsibilities if you live on a riverside or by a reservoir

Some tips they give when it floods are:

Make sure everyone can escape
Tune into your local radio station
Switch off your gas and electricity
Put your flood plan into action
Move important things to safety
Put plugs into sinks and baths and weigh down to stop water backing up
If time, fit flood protection products

London Marathon 2012

Following the tragic death of London marathon runner Claire Squires; over £700,000 has now been raised for her charity the Samaritans.
This is an extraordinary show of generosity and support from the public. Our deepest sympathies go to the family of Claire and as mentioned please do keep giving as Claire would have done.
The London marathon has been running since 1981 with 10 deaths since then, but with more than 800,000 people crossing the finishing line to this day.
One of our team has run the London marathon before and it is such a massive achievement, some of the rest of us would love to run it one day. We know a few others that have run it this year for Parkinson’s Newbury and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Birmingham, where many military patients are treated). Well done to all those who completed it. If you have run it before, tell us how you got on and would you do it again?!?!

Reading FC are promoted to the Premiership

In other local news to us, Reading FC have been promoted to the premier league. It’s a fantastic achievement and we are very proud of Brian McDermott and the boys. It has only happened twice now in our 141 year history of the club. Last time they made it was for the 2006/2007 season, after going up on a record 106 points under Steve Coppell. They managed to finish a very respectable 8th but the following season saw them relegated back to the Championship. After last years disappointment of losing to Swansea in the playoff finals, this comes as great relief and satisfaction of making it through to play the top teams in the country.

London 2012 Olympics – 100 days to go…

With 100 days left to go until the opening cermony of the 2012 London Olympics, further preparations are well underway and the excitment is building. Some of the staff here in the office have tickets to events, including rowing, sailing, hockey and volleyball. We are all looking forward to going, and joining in the once in a lifetime celebrations. Travel Tips

Are you planning on going away in the Easter holidays? Does just the thought of travelling create stress? Here are some tips for a more enjoyable, stress-free holiday.

1. Always allow yourself to have plenty of time at the airport, especially having young children things usually take a lot longer than planned.

2. Check the latest restrictions on hand luggage before travelling. The more stringent regulations relate to carrying liquids, gels and creams, which includes baby foods, drinks and nappy cream. The standard instructions are not to carry over 100ml of any single item, although exceptions are usually made for essential medicines or supplies for children under two.

3. Some airlines let you check in online, which allows you to book preferred seats from home and cuts out queuing. When you get to the airport, you usually join a fast-track queue to hand over your checked luggage.

4. Travelling can be very boring indeed especially for children. Whatever form of travel you are using pack the kids their own backpack with all their favourite toys and games, i.e. lego, books, guessing games, dolls and crayons. Many travel games can be played as competitions or just to pass the time and quite often appeal to all the family. Portable DVD players and iPods will keep your kids entertained for hours, may be worth investing in one! Don’t forget some headphones so the music or movie does not disturb the driver.

5. Kids always become irritable when they are hungry. Make sure you bring plenty of travel friendly snacks, such as fruit, cereal bars and sandwiches.

6. Finally make sure you label everything, with all the bits and bobs you take on holiday it is inevitable that something is dropped or left behind. Allow yourself more of a chance to get that lost item back with some of our labels.

Spring

So the clocks go forward this weekend, it finally feels like spring has arrived. Spring is easily my favorite season—all the flowers are blooming, baby animals are being born, the weather is beginning to warm up.

These are our top 5 tips for a splendid spring:
*Collect a handful of wild flowers
*Take regular swift morning walks
*Prune the roses, lavenders and buddleia’s
*Have a picnic
*Get out in the sunshine for your intake of Vitamin D, but don’t forget your sunscreen!

World Poetry Day

Today is World Poetry Day! The purpose of the day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world. Melanie in the office has a favourite childhood poem ‘THE DIVERTING HISTORY OF JOHN GILPIN’. Written by William Cowper in the 18th Century. The poem tells how Gilpin and his wife and children became separated during a journey to the Bell Inn, Edmonton, after Gilpin loses control of his horse, and is carried ten miles further to the town of Ware. No radio 2 listeners could resolve the conundrum as to what exactly a train-band captain eke is. Melanie text in to the show this morning telling them her favourite poem which was later read out by Vanessa.
